The Scout Guide is a high-quality publication dedicated to living beautifully and living well. Founded as a lifestyle magazine and website for Charlottesville, VA in 2010, The Scout Guide now publishes guides for over 60 cities nationwide.
Having rapidly expanded to cities across the country, the magazine desperately needed a better way to connect with its readers and help them find the content they needed online. Working closely with The Scout Guide team we helped them create dedicated city pages and an online directory that puts the publication’s highly curated network right at your fingertips. With city specific blog posts, digital editions, and a highly customizable local directory, users now have all the details they need to live like an insider, wherever they are.

Discovering the Best of Local
Helping users find everything they need to live a beautiful, curated life
Creating an online experience that enabled users to easily find businesses by location, category and publication was the most important goal of The Scout Guide redesign. To get the fullest picture possible of the needs of their readers, we held several requirements sessions with TSG staff to figure out how to best present their huge database of local artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs from across the country. The solution was a custom directory that can be searched by city, state, guide, and category – which means you can find an auctioneer in Austin or a caterer in Cleveland with just a few simple clicks.
To cultivate the publication’s celebration of all things local, The Scout Guide wanted to ensure that each scouted city had its own dedicated online community. To meet their need, we built out over 60 city pages, each with its own local blog, digital editions of the publication, access to the directory, and contact information for each editor. Users can now dig deep into each scouted location to find everything they need to live a beautiful, simple, well-curated life.
All of the content, including the directory data, is managed within WordPress. We extended WordPress to give TSG the ability to add new businesses as they scout them, and easily edit existing ones on the old site. We also built the site to allow for growth. Having added 60 cities in 6 years, we can only imagine what’s next for The Scout Guide, so we built a solution that can easily grow and adapt with the business.
